Gordon Strachan believes if Scotland can qualify for Euro 2008 it would be their greatest ever achievement.

Scotland face Italy this weekend in a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier requiring a victory to guarantee their place at next summer's finals in Austria & Switzerland.

Celtic boss Strachan, who was inducted into Scottish Football's Hall of Fame on Sunday, is confident Scotland can overcome Italy and reach their first finals since the 1998 World Cup.

"If you look at former qualifying campaigns, the great players Scotland have had and you think about that, they were fantastic," Strachan told Sky Sports News

"But if they win on Saturday I think it would be the best team performance ever."

Strachan believes Italy will hold no fears for Scotland and with a bit of luck, they can beat the world champions at Hampden Park.

"I don't think they have great respect for the players they are playing against, they do not fear them which is great," added Strachan

"I think that is the best way of taking on good players. You understand you do your best and have no fear.

"With a little bit of luck and a little bit of ability then they could pull off a great result

"I don't think Scotland will get beat."

Strachan also insisted Scott Brown will be fit to face Italy despite fears over the Celtic star's fitness.

Brown was the victim of a horror tackle from Benfica's Augustin Binya during last week's UEFA Champions League clash at Parkhead.

The attacking midfielder escaped serious injury in the incident and Strachan says he will be linking up with the Scotland squad,

"He is alright as far as I am concerned," noted Strachan. "I did not see him in the treatment room on Friday so he must be alright."

Strachan admitted Brown was lucky to escape serious injury following Binya's lunge.

"I think he is a wiry character and I think he was lucky.

"He just had his foot off the ground, and no more and if the foot had been planted it could have been a bad one."
