Even with Gonzalez injured, Dolphins defense not ready to slow Manning, Colts ![]()
Two former division rivals clash when the Dolphins host the Colts on Monday Night Football. Indianapolis scraped out a victory over the Jags while Miami was completely embarrassed by the Falcons. Now Indy wants to establish some distance between itself and the Titans, while the Dolphins just want to prove they belong with the big boys.
NFL Week 2 betting matchups: Colts at Dolphins

Spread: Colts -3
Obviously the Colts are thrilled to open their season with a 14-12 win over Jacksonville, but we're betting management wasn't too happy to learn Anthony Gonzalez will miss several weeks with a knee injury. Gonzalez was expected to see a leap in production this season, and losing him means the unproven Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon will have to fill his shoes. Of course, it will likely just mean more balls for Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. Wayne was sensational last week, hauling in 10 passes for 162 yards from Peyton Manning.
Defensively, the Colts were sound. Jacksonville's passing game couldn't get anything going and was limited to just 114 total yards. Maurice Jones-Drew ran well with 97 yards on 21 carries, but most NFL teams will relish playing a one-dimensional offence any day of the week. Oddly, the team collected zero turnovers and one sack. This is likely just a fluke, however, and not a reflection of the post-Tony Dungy era.
Miami, meanwhile, was trounced by Atlanta. The Dolphins badly need to prove they're not a one-year wonder, or at least not a team that peaked a few years earlier than expected. That's certainly appears to be the case last week's 19-7 defeat, though. Miami turned the ball over four times and its passing game looked as anemic as Jacksonville's (Chad Pennington threw for just 176 yards).
On the other side of the ball, the Miami defense was doomed by errors and poor field position from the offense. Jason Taylor had a sack in his return to the Dolphins, though, and they're hoping he can rekindle the magic that made him a star in Miami.
NFL odds lean in Indy's favor, and with good reason. The Colts are a perennial double-digit win team and always a threat to win a Super Bowl, especially with MVP Peyton Manning at the helm. The Dolphins perhaps grew too fast last year, largely thanks to a very soft schedule; now they have to face heavyweights like Indy (or Atlanta) and they're simply not ready. Miami is headed in the right direction, but a defense that couldn't fluster Matt Ryan isn't going to slow down Manning whatsoever. This one has blowout written all over it. Make Indianapolis your online betting pick.
