Wimbledon Finals Preview

Posted on 07/04/2009

The sportsbook Wimbledon odds reach their conclusion this weekend and, while we won’t see Andy Murray in the men’s final after all, we really can’t complain about the matchups. The battle of the Williams sisters and Federer/Roddick? Not too shabby. Let’s make some picks.

MEN’S FINAL – Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick

It’s the shoo-in versus the improbable finalist in this tennis betting affair. Roger Federer breezed his way to his seventh consecutive final almost without breaking a sweat; it almost seems like he would dominate the whole tournament even if a healthy Rafael Nadal were in the mix, as he’s now won 18 consecutive matches.

You have to respect Andy Roddick. The veteran American battled hard to upset Andy Murray and is out to prove his prime isn’t over. It’s hard to give him any hope against the Swiss Mister, though. Federer is 18-2 all-time against Roddick. You don’t need any crazy analysis or betting software to help you make this pick; Federer will beat Roddick on Sunday.

Daily sportsbook betting pick: Roger Federer

WOMEN’S FINAL – Venus Williams vs Serena Williams

Nice work, seeders. The top two tournament seeds justified their ranking as Venus and Serena Williams meet in the final for the second straight year. Venus beat Serena in last year’s final but Serena leads 5-2 all time in Grand Slam finals against her sister. However, the sisters are 10-10 against each other all-time, so who has the edge?

Many bettors will lean toward Venus because she’s been so dominant in the tournament. Her dismantling of World No. 1 Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-1 was the most lopsided semifinal defeat at Wimbledon in 40 years. However, I wonder if Venus’ easy road to the final could hurt her killer instinct.

Now, she faces a warrior in the Grand-Slam specialist Serena. The smaller Williams sister scratched and clawed her way to the final, overcoming multiple match points to defeat Elena Dementieva in 2 hours and 49 minutes – the longest recorded match in women’s Wimbledon semifinal (or final) history.

Some bettors may worry Serena will be burnt out, but she still had a day of rest between her matchups. I think she’ll get the better of her sister since she’ll be sharper from her challenging road to the final.

Daily sports pick: Serena Williams
