Golf Betting - Canadian Open Preview and Pick ![]()
Not so fast, football betting fans. The golf season ain’t quite over yet. The PGA Championship is on the horizon and a forgotten little tournament, the Canadian Open, features a better-than-expected field and a stadium course designed by Jack Nicklaus himself. Who are the most intriguing picks this week?
THE CANADIANS: Mike Weir, Stephen Ames
It’s only natural to consider the Canadian citizens at the Open, as they’ll have a lot of hype, not to mention more drive to win than anyone else on the course. However, they may not yield the result everyone hopes for in 2009. Mike Weir has been maddeningly inconsistent, not just week to week, but round to round. He always plays well on Thursday or Friday but collapses on the weekends. He and his sportsbook golf odds aren’t reliable this week. Ames hasn’t looked confident all season and it shows in his results, so I’d avoid him too.
Betting management verdict: Avoid
THE BIG NAMES: Retief Goosen, Anthony Kim
The calm, steel-nerved Retief Goosen is a decent play pretty much every week, as he’s well-rounded and can thus adjust to different types of courses, including a medium-length shotmaker’s course like Glen Abbey. He’s fresh off a tie for fifth at the British Open, so he’s playing well enough to win at the moment. Anthony Kim was playing well before falling apart at Turnberry, but he’s nicely suited to Glen Abbey, so you should give him a mulligan, pun intended.
Betting management verdict: Good low-risk plays, especially Goosen
THE SOLID PICK: LUKE DONALD
He’s not as flashy a pick as Goosen or Kim, but that can work to your advantage at the offshore sportsbook this week. Donald’s playing well, having tied Goosen for fifth at the Open, and he has five top-10 finishes this season. He’s a great scrambler and he’s simply due to win.
Betting management verdict: Great all-around pick
THE SUPER SLEEPER: MARK CALCAVECCHIA
Don’t laugh. Remember, he won this tournament in 2005. He also quietly competed all weekend at the British Open last week and finished tied for 27th. That’s better than Tiger or Anthony Kim could say. Who knows? Maybe he’ll make good contact again this week.
Daily sports pick: Luke Donald
