Buick Open Betting - Bombers versus the little guys at Warwick Hills

Posted on 08/01/2009

Buick Open betting players should get ready to see some birdies at Warwick Hills this weekend, as last year’s tournament (won by Kenny Perry, who is skipping the event) had the second-lowest scoring average of the year. It’s been said that the course favors long hitters like Tiger Woods and three-time winner Vijay Singh, but guys like Perry, Jim Furyk and Rocco Mediate have also won this decade.

The Bombers

Tiger Woods – He’s won here twice, and has finished worst than 10th just once in eight starts. He’s the offshore sportsbook favorite at +130, and you can bet that he’ll be eager to get out after missing the cut at the British Open. Woods is ninth in birdies and 25th in putting this year, and he’s angry. It could get ugly.

Nick Watney – He’s cooled off a bit since his hot start to the year, missing the cut in three of his last six events, but he had a respectable 27th at the British Open. Watney is fifth on the Tour in driving distance, which could set up some birdies (Watney is 10th in this stat) and eagles (15th). At +3300, he could be worth a shot

Jonathan Byrd – At +5000, why not? Byrd is long off the tee (29th in distance), and he’s a birdie machine, ranking third in birdies in 2006 and 2007, and he’s 12th this year. If he can avoid the big numbers, Byrd could be one of the sleeper sports picks of the tournament.

The Little Guys

Jim Furyk – Mr. Consistency won this event in 2003, and he has eight top-10s in 14 trips to Warwick Hills. With seven top-10s in 13 events where he’s reached the weekend, he’s due, and he’s the biggest threat to Woods.

Justin Leonard – He won here in 1996, and he’s coming off an eighth-place result in the British Open. He’s 115th in distance, but when you’re eighth in putting and 14th in birdies, you’ll always have a chance on a course like Warwick Hills. Leonard is listed at +2500 this week.

Scott Verplank – This guy is as familiar with this place as anyone as he makes his 18th appearance at Warwick Hills. Verplank won here in 1988, and he’s working on a string of three top-10s in a row. He offers great value at +2800.

X-Factor – Brandt Snedeker was the 2007 Rookie of the Year, and challenged at The Masters in 2008. Since then, he’s gone downhill, but he could be on the mend after three top-fives in his last four events. Snedeker has a rib injury which forced him to miss two months, but he’s rounding back into form. With odds of +3300, he could be worth a shot in your gambling software.
