Marquette certainly didn't look the part of an underdog in Friday's second- round matchup with sixth-seeded Xavier, as the club rolled to victory. The Golden Eagles followed that effort with a stellar performance against a favored Syracuse squad last Sunday, besting the Orange by a 66-62 final to advance to the round of 16 for the first time in eight years. They covered in that game as a 4.5-point underdog. Marquette is making its 29th NCAA Tournament appearance and owns a 36-29 record in the event. The club did win the national title back in 1977, its lone NCAA championship. Head coach Buzz Peterson has led this group to a 22-14 overall record, and the Golden Eagles are one of only two Big East teams remaining in this tournament, noteworthy considering that the conference earned 11 selections to set a record.
In a game that figured to see plenty of scoring, North Carolina bested Long Island in Friday's second round by a 102-87 margin. Sunday's third-round encounter with Washington was far more competitive and featured a controversial ending, but Roy Williams' team emerged victorious by a score of 86-83. The Tar Heels, who are 28-7 overall, won the ACC regular season title and reached the championship game of the conference tournament as well. They have now won 11 of their last 12 outings dating back to the regular season and have obviously peaked at the perfect time. UNC, which is a stellar 104-39 all- time in the NCAA Tournament, has five national titles to its credit, the most recent of which was earned in 2009. They failed to cover in that game as a 3.5-point favorite.
