UFC 100 Betting - St-Pierre vs Alves

Posted on 07/09/2009

The UFC 100 odds are posted and the biggest event in MMA history is just days away. Who will win the welterweight championship belt between Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves? Let’s break down the co-main event of this amazing MMA fight card.

GEORGES “RUSH” ST-PIERRE

Record: 18-2
Odds: -260 favorite

Strengths

Few fighters have more strengths to list than GSP, as he’s one of the most versatile and athletic fighters MMA has ever seen. His karate background gives him powerful striking – especially his kicks, and he mixes up their levels. He also is a fantastic wrestler – remember, he outwrestled Matt Hughes, Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, all regarded among the sport’s greatest wrestlers – and he overpowers virtually everyone on the ground.

What really sets GSP apart is the respect and preparation he puts toward every opponent. Especially since his upset loss to Matt Serra, GSP takes no fight lightly. He always has a game plan and his opponent never seems to expect it.

Weaknesses

GSP’s one weakness isn’t even a sure thing, but most fight fans have questions about his chin. Matt Serra was not known as a knockout artist yet he caught St-Pierre with a shot that looked relatively harmless. As impressive as GSP’s career has been, he’s continuously scored victories against fighters known more for their ground skills than punching power. Thiago Alves will probably be the hardest hitter he’s ever faced.

THIAGO “Pit Bull” Alves

Record: 22-4
Odds: +200 underdog

Strengths

It’s fitting that the Pit Bull is a dog in this fight. Thiago Alves Is a dog in the octagon; he’s ferocious, big for a welterweight, and attacks his opponents relentlessly with his Muay Thai knees and devastating leg kicks. He’s a powerhouse who likes to be the aggressor and he can finish fights, as he showed with five straight knockout wins before he won by decision against Koscheck in his last fight.

Weaknesses

Some sportsbook betting predictions experts feel Thiago Alves is a one-dimensional fighter. He’s a phenomenal striker and, while his takedown defense is strong, he’s not too comfortable on the ground. If the world-class wrestler St-Pierre takes Alves to the ground, can Alves survive, let alone stand back up?

Outlook

While St-Pierre has to be careful against a killer like Alves, his versatility will win him this fight. His strategy will like be to take Alves down. If GSP could ragdoll the great Matt Hughes, I don’t see how Alves will survive. Look for St-Pierre to win the fight on the ground, likely via ground-and-pound TKO or maybe even submission.

Best betting management pick: St-Pierre -260
