Baseball Betting - Two of AL's best square off in the Bronx

Posted on 07/20/2009

Unlike Tiger Woods being a British Open betting bust, Detroit and New York challenging in the American League shouldn’t be much of a surprise. The two clash at Yankee Stadium this weekend for three games, and the home team are the favorites according to handicapping software.

Tigers Yankees Odds – Friday, July 17-Sunday, July 19

Luke French (1-0, 1.93) vs AJ Burnett (8-4, 3.77) – Friday, 7:05 PM ET

French is making just the fifth appearance and third start of his young career, and he’s fared very well so far, earning a win over Kansas City despite needing 101 pitches in 6.1 innings. Burnett has allowed six runs in his last five starts, which spans 33.2 innings and four victories. This is the Burnett that the Yankees paid over $80 million for, and he’s a solid sportsbook baseball betting pick against the Tigers, going 3-1 in five career starts. Go with his experience for a Yankees win.

Justin Verlander (10-4, 3.38) vs CC Sabathia (8-6, 3.86) – Saturday, 1:05 PM ET

These pitching behemoths have squared once already in 2009, with Verlander leading the Tigers to a 4-2 win, although Sabathia managed to pitch the full eight innings that the Yankees needed him. This will be the toughest game in this series for your gambling software to handicap, and the posted total for this matchup should be pretty low, so don’t expect a lot of runs. Verlander’s been known to slide a bit in the second half of the season throughout his career, while Sabathia is one of the best second-half pitchers in the game, as proven by his great performance with Milwaukee last year. Take Sabathia to even the score.

Edwin Jackson (7-4, 2.52) vs Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 4.25) – Sunday, 2:05 PM ET

In one of the worst collapses of the year, Jackson had tossed six innings of scoreless four-hit ball against the Yankees on April 28th, before his bullpen came in to allow 10 runs in the seventh inning of an 11-0 romp for New York. Meanwhile, Chamberlain hasn’t gone past the sixth inning in three weeks and is looking like he wants to go back to the bullpen, which can’t give New York fans much confidence. There’ll be no sweep in the Bronx this weekend: make the Tigers one of your sports picks in your offshore sportsbook.
