Police raid labs, homes of former T-Mobile doctors ![]()
BERLIN (Reuters) - Officers from Germany's Federal Crime Office (BKA) raided the homes and laboratories of two doctors who once worked for the T-Mobile cycling team, the state prosecutor's office in Freiburg said on Wednesday.
The two doctors, Andreas Schmid and Lothar Heinrich, were suspected of producing performance-enhancing drugs and administering them to athletes, the state prosecutor's office said.
"It's too early to say whether anything was confiscated during the raid or what the doping substances might have been, as the investigation is still ongoing," said Wolfgang Maier, a spokesman for the state prosecutor's office.
In May, T-Mobile severed its ties with the two doctors after they admitted giving performance-enhancing drugs to individual cyclists.
Schmid and Heinrich were also let go from their posts at the University of Freiburg.
The T-Mobile cycling team has been embroiled in several doping scandals in the past.
The team has since taken a strong public stance against doping, saying it has a "firm zero-tolerance policy." This year they sacked Lorenzo Bernucci and Patrik Sinkewitz after the riders gave positive doping tests.
