Italys Cunego takes ProTour lead after Amstel victory ![]()
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands, April 20 (Reuters) - Italy’s Damiano Cunego of Lampre took over the lead in the ProTour competition on Sunday after winning the Amstel Gold Race.
He beat Luxembourg’s Frank Schleck and Alejandro Valverde of Spain in an uphill sprint at the end of the 257.4km race.
Cunego got 40 points for his win after scoring 33 in the recent Tour of the Basque Country stage race and leads the individual ProTour standings with 73 points.
Early ProTour leader Andrei Grepiel of Germany did not ride the Amstel Gold Race and slipped to second with 62 points.
Tour of the Basque Country winner Alberto Contador is third with 58 points with Thomas Dekker of the Netherlands in fourth after finishing fifth in the Amstel Gold Race.
CSC moved up from fourth to first in the team standings thanks to Schleck’s second place in the Amstel Gold Race. They have 72 points ahead of Caisse d’Epargne and Astana who have 70.
Spain lead the national standings with 203 points ahead of Belgium with 150 and Italy who are third with 146 points.
The next event on the ProTour calendar is the Tour de Romandie stage race in Switzerland from April 29-May 4.
A dispute between several major race organisers and the International Cycling Union (UCI), the sport’s governing body, means Wednesday’s Fleche-Wallonne race and next Sunday’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege event are not part of the 2008 ProTour.
