India dominate Pakistan 50-1 in Kolkata

Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman made centuries to put India in total control after the second day of the second Test against Pakistan.

India declared their first innings at 616-5 before skipper Anil Kumble claimed the wicket of Yasir Hameed to reduce Pakistan to 50-1 in reply by the close.

The hosts resumed at 352-3 and Wasim Jaffer soon extended his overnight 192 into a second Test double century.

But the opening batsman did not last much longer, edging behind off Sohail Tanvir (2-166) for 202 in the seventh over of the day.

That brought Ganguly and Laxman together to share a 163-run, fifth-wicket partnership that ensured the hosts did not waste the good work of their top-order.

Ganguly finally lived up to his 'Prince of Kolkata' nickname by completing his first century in his eighth Test at Eden Gardens during the afternoon session.

He departed shortly afterwards for 102, caught in the deep to become occasional off-spinner Salman Butt's (1-36) maiden Test wicket.

But there was still more pain to come for Pakistan's bowlers as Laxman continued to pile up the runs in the company of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The sixth-wicket pair compiled an unbroken stand of 78 to allow Kumble to declare at 616-5 during the evening session.

Laxman was unbeaten on 112 - his 11th Test century - while Dhoni finished on 50 not out.

Kumble then capped India's day by trapping Hameed lbw for 21 to leave Pakistan on 50-1 at the close.

India won the series-opener in Delhi by six wickets and can seal the three-match series with another victory in Kolkata.
